Faro Airport to Vilamoura: A local's guide to airport transfers in 2026

Vilamoura is an exclusive and stylish resort town situated in the beautiful central Algarve region. Southern Portugal's main international airport is located at Faro, 25km to the east of Vilamoura.

The question I'm most asked is: "How do I travel from Faro Airport to Vilamoura?"

As with all holiday destinations, there are several options, and the right one depends on your budget and style of holiday. Your choice will differ if you're after a relaxing break, travelling with family, or on a last-minute getaway trying to keep the budget as low as possible.

When I travel from Faro Airport to Vilamoura, my go-to option is to use one of the ride-hailing apps, either Uber or Bolt. This changes if I am travelling in peak season and landing during Faro Airport's busy period (9am to 4pm). For this, I plan ahead and book an airport transfer. During the shoulder and low-season months, Uber provides the best balance of convenience and cost. But in peak season, demand is so high that I've been left waiting for ages, watching the app fail to connect me to a driver, before finally paying an inflated fare. Taxis are available too, but they're always the most expensive option.

If you're looking to save money, there is public transport, but it is surprisingly poor between Faro Airport and Vilamoura. The route requires two separate buses and is time-consuming due to infrequent departures. It is so poor I would not consider it an option.

I'm Philip and for over 25 years I've been exploring the Algarve, where my Portuguese wife and I lived for several years and still return to regularly from our current home in Lisbon. I've made the journey from the airport many times, including two trips with my sister and her young family. This guide shares everything I've learnt first-hand, along with the latest advice for 2026.

Quick overview of travel from Faro Airport to Vilamoura

If you're reading this guide before your summer holiday to Vilamoura, I strongly recommend that you book a private transfer. This is the hassle-free way to start your holiday, and the one I chose when travelling with my sister and two young nieces. A private transfer to Vilamoura can cost as little as €33 (2026 prices) if booked far enough in advance. I've listed my favourite transfer companies later in this article.

If you're reading this guide just after landing at Faro Airport, your best options are an Uber or Bolt.

Uber and Bolt fares start from €25 for Basic and €56 for XL (for groups larger than four), but demand is high in peak season and at peak times (9am to 4pm). While travelling to Vilamoura I've had fares double at the busiest times, and that's before the hassle of actually getting a driver to accept. This is why I book a transfer in peak season.

A taxi will always be the most expensive option, with a fare around €40 to €50. Always agree on a price or ensure the meter is switched on before leaving the airport. I have been burnt so many times by taxis in Portugal (mainly Lisbon) that I simply avoid them. Also, if you're taking a taxi, make sure it's a standard size. The larger ones with five or more seats cost 20% more, even if you don't need the extra seats.

There are shared transfers in peak season, but I find them slow, since they make multiple drop-offs around Vilamoura.

This guide covers each option in more detail, along with all the tips and tricks I've learnt.

Uber and Bolt (ride-hailing apps) from Faro Airport to Vilamoura

When I don’t have a car, Uber and Bolt are my first options for travel around the Algarve. And this is the option I most frequently choose when heading from Faro Airport to Vilamoura. Their fares vary depending on demand, but a transfer from the airport to Vilamoura will be around €25-35 and will always be cheaper than a taxi.

The main advantage of the ride-hailing apps is the ability to know the fare before booking a transfer. In Portugal, fares are surprisingly inexpensive, even for long journeys.

The main issue is their popularity during peak season, when every tourist wants to use them for trips to the beach, day trips, or later for evening meals and nights out. When I have arrived at Faro Airport, I've been caught in these peak-time rushes and watched in vain as my app was unable to connect to a driver. Once I finally got a driver, the peak fare was significantly more than the base fare. Since this issue, I always book an airport transfer if I am travelling in the summer.

One tip I learnt from a driver in Lisbon is that during these times is to choose the more expensive "comfort" class. Drivers are more likely to accept these higher-paying fares, so it is a good way to secure a ride faster. Also, if you choose a base fare, the app may offer a priority fee, which pushes the cost up to the comfort level anyway. So you might as well choose comfort to get a better car.

If you plan to use Uber or Bolt, it is advisable to have the app downloaded on your phone before arriving in Portugal, and to be familiar with how to use it. There is nothing worse than trying to connect a bank card or download the app over a patchy internet connection. Faro Airport offers free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal, allowing you to book your Uber or Bolt upon arrival if you don't have mobile data roaming.

Uber and Bolt are very similar; ask any Portuguese citizen, and you will find opinion is equally split on which one they prefer. I prefer Uber; my wife always chooses Bolt. Generally, Uber is slightly more expensive, but the standard of their cars (and drivers) is higher. An Uber car has to be at least a Peugeot 308, whereas Bolt has no such requirement. Also, many drivers work for both companies, choosing the highest-paying fare.

Insight: Although it's not standard practice to tip Uber or Bolt drivers in Portugal, a €1 or €2 coin is always appreciated.

Private Transfer from the Faro Airport to Vilamoura

A private transfer is the best and fastest method of travel from Faro Airport to Vilamoura. This also has the added convenience of having a driver waiting for you at the airport.

The best transfer company regarded by people who live and work in the Algarve is Yellow Fish. They are the largest transfer company in the Algarve, with a fleet of modern cars and professional drivers.

A private transfer from Faro Airport to Vilamoura in 2026 can cost as little as €29.20, if booked far enough in advance (but in peak season, expect it to cost up to €38). Further details and bookings can be found on the Yellow Fish website: www.yellowfishtransfers.com.

Other recommended transfer companies include:
Sun Line Transfers: www.sunlinetransfers.com/
Algarserra: www.algarserra.com/

Insight: There are many third-party booking websites offering private transfers, these are always more expensive to cover their costs. Hotels and travel agencies typically add 10-15% on the basic price of an airport transfer. Always book directly with a transfer company for the best price.

Insight 2: Many of the transfer companies provide prices based on demand. Booking the transfer two months in advance will ensure the lowest prices, while leaving it to the last minute will always result in higher prices. If there are higher prices compare the three transfer companies listed above.

A taxi transfer to Vilamoura

The relatively short distance (25km) from the airport to Vilamoura means a taxi is a viable option. Also you may be forced to take a taxi if you are unable to connect to a Uber/Bolt driver at peak times.

A taxi transfer will be the most expensive means of travel, but it is the most convenient if you haven't booked a transfer.

A taxi from the airport uses tariff 3 (the 'outside city limits' tariff), and the rate for a 4-seater taxi in 2025 is €1.12 per kilometre. There are additional fees for luggage (€1.60), waiting in traffic and any toll roads used (such as the A22). These prices are 20% higher at night (9pm to 6am), as well as at weekends or on public holidays.
Insight: Expect a taxi fare to Vilamoura to be around €32 or €38 at night and weekends (plus a 10% tip)

A 7-seater taxi has a base rate of €1.30 per kilometre, and this rate will be used even if you are in a group of less than four. If you are a group of four or less, refuse a 7-seater taxi if it is at the head of the taxi queue at the airport.

The majority of taxis accept card payments, but check with the driver before starting the journey. American Express is rarely accepted due to its high fees.
Insight: Portugal does not have a significant tipping culture, but a small tip (10%) is usually expected for a taxi ride.

Public transport from Faro Airport to Vilamoura

Considering that Vilamoura is only 25 km from Faro airport, the journey by public transport is time-consuming. The two stages of the journey are; the bus (or taxi) from the airport to Faro bus station, and a bus from Faro to Vilamoura. Depending on where your accommodation is, you may need to take a further taxi.

The first stage is the 6km journey from Faro Airport to Faro bus station. The number 16 bus connects the airport with central Faro, and there are departures every 30-50 minutes – the latest timetable is posted at the bus stop. The journey takes 20 minutes, and the fare is €2.50.

The number 16 bus departs from the bus stop just to the left of the terminal building when exiting it (GPS: 37.021, -7.968)
A taxi from the airport to Faro bus station costs €10-12 and takes 10 minutes.

The number 9 bus route connects Faro with Vilamoura, and departs from Faro bus station. This bus service is operated by Vamus, the new public transport company of the Algarve.

At the weekends there are only six departures, which increases to ten Monday-Friday. The limited number of departures means there can be a long wait at Faro, especially at the weekends. The latest timetable can be seen on the Vamus website: vamusalgarve.pt/#/pt/vamus%20algarve/schedules
(Note: The Faro-Albufeira bus is number 9)

The tickets for the bus must be purchased from the bus station ticket office before boarding. Also, when purchasing the ticket, confirm the departure location of the bus, as it is often not from the bus station but on the street in front of it.
Insight: There is no train station in Vilamoura, so the train is not an option.
